I know first-hand how difficult it can be to struggle with learning without understanding why.
I wasn’t diagnosed with dyslexia at school. I found reading and spelling difficult and often felt that I wasn’t as capable as other people. For a long time, I even believed that struggling with these things was somehow a sign that I wasn’t intelligent.
Everything changed when I reached A-Level and had an amazing teacher who helped me discover study strategies that actually worked for me. For the first time, I understood that I could learn — I just needed to find the right ways to do it.
That support changed the direction of my life. I went on to university and achieved a First Class degree.
Having dyslexia myself, and also having a child with dyslexia, has given me a very personal understanding of the challenges that children and young people can face.
It is one of the reasons I am so passionate about what I do. I want children and young people to understand that dyslexia does not define their ability or their potential. With the right support, strategies and encouragement, they can develop their strengths, build confidence and achieve things they may not have believed possible.
At EJ Specialist Dyslexia Services, I combine my personal experience with 17 years of teaching experience and specialist dyslexia teaching, to provide individualised support for children and young people aged 5–16.
If your child is struggling, you don’t have to wait for them to lose confidence before seeking support.
